2020 ushered in a year of beauty and brutality. While others retreated, the people of South Atlanta chose to lean in.
Focused Community Strategies (FCS) is a nonprofit committed to combating gentrification in South Atlanta. In 2020, FCS faced unprecedented challenges that tested their foundation. The dual impact of systemic racial injustice and the global pandemic deeply affected South Atlanta, but FCS’s strong community ties helped them persevere. They emerged stronger and they chose to embrace the theme of “brutal and beautiful” to reflect the resilience of South Atlanta’s people.
This report aimed to capture these themes of struggle, resilience, and unwavering support within the community. The booklet uncomfortably conveyed this theme through shifting blocks, misalignment, and moving lines, symbolizing the transformation. Stripping away their usual vibrant brand colors, the design focused on a tonal black-and-white palette, allowing images to provide the only color and letting white space carry the narrative with minimal distractions.
